Traveling Overseas for a Marathon: Top Tips from Anna Liptak
By: Anna Liptak
Embarking on an international marathon is an exhilarating experience, but it requires thorough preparation. As someone who has run over 40 marathons worldwide, I’ve learned a thing or two about making these adventures as smooth as possible. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure you’re ready for your marathon abroad.
1. Essential Items
- Passport & Visa: Always check that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates and that you have the necessary visa for your destination.
- Phone & Adaptor: Bring a phone adaptor compatible with your destination’s outlets. A double adaptor can be particularly useful.
- Chargers: Ensure you pack chargers for all your electronic devices. Keeping a spare charger or power bank can be a lifesaver.
- Credit/Debit Card: Verify with your bank about international fees and inform them of your travel plans to avoid any issues with card usage abroad.
- US Cash: Carry some cash in small denominations for tipping and minor expenses.
- Travel Insurance: Keep a copy of your travel insurance with you at all times.
- Running Gear & Shoes: Pack your running clothes and shoes in your carry-on bag. These items are crucial and should be protected.
- Race Day Fuel: Bring gels, chews, and any specific race day nutrition you require.
- Anti-Chafing Cream/Vaseline: Essential for preventing chafing during your run.
- Pain Relief Medication: Include pain relievers like Panadol or Nurofen in your kit.
- Bandaids/Blister Bandaids: Prepare for any blisters or minor injuries with appropriate bandages.
- Medication: Pack any personal medication you need and ensure it’s in its original packaging.
- Warm Clothes: Bring warm clothes that you don’t mind discarding at the start line.
- Address of Accommodation: Know the address and contact details of where you’ll be staying.
- Copy of Documents: Leave copies of your passport, visa, and travel insurance with a trusted person back home.
2. Nice to Haves
- Noise-Cancelling Headphones: Perfect for relaxing or focusing.
- Reading Material: A good book or magazine for downtime.
- Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Face Wipes: Keep fresh and comfortable.
- Hand Sanitizer and Antibacterial Wipes: Essential for maintaining hygiene.
- Eye Mask: Useful for a good night’s sleep.
- Familiar Snacks: Bring some of your favorite snacks for race day.
- Electrolytes: To keep you hydrated and energized.
Running Clothes & Gear: Make sure you bring the clothes you’ve trained in, including your underwear and socks. These items are familiar and comfortable, helping you perform your best on race day.
