From New York to Boston: Andrew McKay’s Journey to Six-Star Glory

    travelogue

What started as a passion has taken Andrew McKay across the globe—and now, it’s about to earn him a place in one of the most elite clubs in marathon history: the Abbott Six Star Finisher Medal.

As a senior project manager for Mossop Construction + Interiors in SA, Andrew is all about setting and achieving targets, and he set his mind to doing the “big six” while also doing either a Half or Full Ironman every year. (180kms bike, 42.2 kms run, 3.8km swim)

We at Adventure Time Travel are beyond proud to have been there with Andrew at every finish line, witnessing his incredible dedication, spirit, and unstoppable drive.

🗽 The Spark in New York

Andrew’s journey began at the 2022 New York Marathon, where he ran as part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation team.

“I was blown away by 50,000-plus runners shoulder to shoulder and more than a million people cheering us on,” Andrew said.

“I couldn’t believe they were clapping for us. I just loved it.”

That race lit a fire—and Andrew hasn’t looked back since.

🇩🇪 A Historic Dash Through Berlin

In September 2023, Andrew took on the BMW Berlin Marathon, finishing in 4 hours and 29 minutes among 43,000+ runners from 131 countries.

“What was cool with Berlin was the Expo—it took place in the old airport hangars at the former Tempelhof Airport. We were collecting bibs where planes once parked!”

From running a flat course through Steglitz and Zehlendorf to exploring Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall, Berlin offered both athletic and cultural magic.

🇺🇸 Big City Vibes in Chicago

October 2024 saw Andrew conquer the Chicago Marathon in 4 hours and 33 minutes, another of the world’s great city races.

“What made this run so special was the experience around it—we spent time in Las Vegas, toured the Hoover Dam, flew by helicopter through the Grand Canyon, and experienced the mind-blowing Sphere.”

The run itself was a stunning tour of the Windy City, packed with crowd energy and flat, fast streets.

    🇬🇧 The Iconic London Marathon

The London Marathon was a bucket-list moment—and one of the most iconic runs in Andrew’s journey. The incredible crowds, historic landmarks, and the magic of racing along the Thames brought his dream closer to reality.

“It’s not just the run—it’s the people, the support, the city itself. You have to take it all in!”

    🇯🇵 Heartfelt Running in Tokyo

To enter the Tokyo Marathon in March 2025, Andrew gave back—making a donation to the Gold Ribbon Network, a charity supporting children battling illness.

“That made it really special for me. It wasn’t just about the race—it was about running for something bigger.”

Andrew ran through the neon heart of Tokyo, soaking up the city’s culture, spirit, and the unmistakable energy of a truly global race.

    🏁 Final Stop: Boston

Now, Andrew stands on the edge of completing his Six Star journey at the Boston Marathon on April 21. And once again, he’s running for a cause—raising nearly $20,000 for the Red Cross International, including through a charity ride during Adelaide’s Tour Down Under.

    💬 It’s More Than Just a Medal

“It’s a celebration—not just for me, but for Megan, my family, and the amazing friends and colleagues who’ve supported me through every run. I’ve been lucky to come through injury-free, and I’m incredibly grateful.”

Andrew also shared his gratitude for Anna Liptak and the Adventure Time Travel team:

“You don’t do something like this solo. If it weren’t for Anna, I wouldn’t have experienced these marathons. She’s such an inspiring person—and I’m truly grateful.”

    🎉 The Adventure Continues

From New York to Boston, through Tokyo, Berlin, London, and Chicago, Andrew’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. It’s a story of goals, growth, giving back—and grabbing life with both hands.

Congratulations, Andrew. We’ll be cheering you on at the finish line in Boston—and every finish line beyond.
